James Kelly

James Kelly (1913 - 2003) was active/lived in New York.  James Kelly is known for Abstract expressionist painting, lithography.

Post-World War II California artist, James Kelly was an abstract-expressionist painter who wrote that "Before the War, I wanted to get away from realistic work but I couldn't figure out how. . . . Picasso's 'Girl Before the Mirror' was the "key to opening the door" (Herskovic 182) to his future career.

James Kelly was born and raised in Pennsylvania; he attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art, 1937 and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 1938. Kelly also attended the Barnes Foundation, Merion, Pennsylvania, 1941, and the California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco, 1951-1954.  He taught at the University of California, Berkeley during the summer of 1957.

Among his awards were the Ford Foundation grant to work at Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles, 1963; the National Endowment for the Arts grant, 1977; and the Peter and Madeline Martin Foundation for the Creative Arts grant, 1990.
